This route is a tale of two distinct cycling experiences. The undeniable highlight and biggest challenge is the ascent of Whiteface Mountain via the Veterans' Memorial Highway. Expect a relentless climb averaging around an 8% gradient for approximately 8 miles, gaining over 3,500 vertical feet, with some sections reaching an 11.3% grade. You will need appropriate gearing to manage this sustained effort. After conquering Whiteface, where the summit offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views, the route transitions to the quieter, more rolling terrain of Silver Lake Road. Starting from the Moose Pond Parking Area, you'll connect to the main routes. Be aware that a toll is required for cyclists to enter the Whiteface Mountain Veterans' Memorial Highway. The pavement on Whiteface is excellent, especially the upper five miles, and Silver Lake Road is generally well-paved. For the best experience and clearest views from the Whiteface summit, plan your ride for a clear day.
