Church of San Leonardo in Borghi

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of San Leonardo in Borghi is an important religious monument in Lucca, located on Via San Leonardo. The church was originally built in 1118 and was completely renovated and reopened for worship in 1821. Of the medieval structures, only the southern side remains, which has been reused in the current construction. Among the old furnishings remains the Madonna in Glory between Saints Leonardo and Marco Evangelista, by Giovanni Marracci. In 1917 a chapel was opened, the work of the painter Giuseppe Lunardi, which is the only organic example of Art Nouveau in a church in Lucca, where a Madonna and Child by the sculptor Augusto Passaglia is venerated. The church of San Leonardo in Borghi is a testimony to many different eras and houses many artistic works.

Canaletto delle Mura

Highlight • River

The Pubblico Condotto ("Public Canal"), also known as "Il Fosso" ("The Ditch"), runs for 13 km through the Lucca plain, passing through the city. From the late 13th century onward, it primarily served to power mills, but also provided water for the population, factories, and agriculture.

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro

Highlight • Historical Site

The piazza is the interior of a Roman amphitheater. The walls are now used for shops and restaurants. On the outside you can still see original parts of the amphitheater.
A beautiful place to sit, eat and drink.
