The Pisan Mountains are among the oldest mountain formations in Italy in geological terms and separate the two cities of Pisa and Lucca. The poet Dante Alighieri mentioned the Pisan Mountains in the 33rd canto of his Divine Comedy "...monte per che i Pisan veder Lucca non ponno..." ("...mountains because of which the Pisans cannot see Lucca...").
