Dominican Sisters Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

San Francisco’s first Archbisho Joseph Sadoc Alemany, a Dominican priest, wrote to the Dominican Sisters of Holy Cross Convent, Brooklyn, New York to come teach the immigrant children of these newly arriving families. Three young sisters arrived in San Francisco on November 11, 1876 to begin the mission of education that would become the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of the Queen of the Holy Rosary (Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose). Founded by Dominic de Guzman (1170 -1221) the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans, as an itinerant Order that would go wherever people move. He also believed that for this preaching to be authentic the preachers needed the support of a communal life where they could pursue constant prayer and a mendicant life, begging for the needs of the community and for the words needed for preaching. From the beginning the sisters tended olive trees and bottled the “golden oil.” They continue to cultivate 200 trees, the largest remaining mission-era olive grove in California, producing extra virgin Dominican Sisters Oil –available only once a year at Holiday Boutique. It's also the sacramental oil for the Diocese of Oakland. They promote environmental sustainability in the facilities, community garden, and recycling programs. The facilities are available year-round for arts, education, music and wellness programs. msjdominicans.org

Old Mission San Jose

Highlight • Religious Site

Nestled in Fremont just north of San Jose, Old Mission San José, originally built by the Spanish in 1797, was painstakingly restored after decades of neglect. Visitors can step into history as they tour the original doors of the 1809 adobe church. Guided and self‑guided tours, the former being led by knowledgeable docents, bring the Rancho to life.
