Mells Village

Highlight • Pub

Mells is a small pretty village in northeast Somerset. The streets feel old with several historically important buildings including the old church and manor house.
The Talbot Inn is a great traditional country pub offering food, drinks and snacks from 11:00 - 23:00 Wed to Sun.
The Walled Garden café and community plant nursery is open for cafe food and pizza from 11:00 - 16:00 Wed to Sun.

The Walled Garden at Mells

Highlight • Natural

Garden cafe surrounded by beautiful planting and sculptures. terraced areas to enjoy the sunshine or a large greenhouse if it is raining. Very cycle friendly, with a wood fired pizza oven if you have worked up enough of an appetite.

Mells River Stone Bridge

Highlight • River

In the valley below Great Elm, a charming bridge crosses the Mells River, with a bench on the riverbank offering a peaceful spot to enjoy the views or take a refreshing dip. A layby on one side of the river provides convenient parking if you'd like to start your journey here.

Long Hill Into Frome

Highlight • Climb

There is a bit of a double hill here so watch out, the first is out of Great Elm and then it dips, and then there is the hill proper. No relief coming the other way, its just as steep, if not quite as long.

Bring your granny gear, the other way into Frome is less hilly but still quite tedious. Recommend heading over to Nunney first if coming from the West.

Wells Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Built from honey-coloured stone between 1176 and 1450, Wells Cathedral is an intricaticate example of Gothic architecture. It has been called "unquestionably one of the most beautiful" and "most poetic" English cathedrals, and its easy to see why.

You can visit the cathedral from 7am - 7pm. Three is also a cafe, shop, and possibility to go on a guided tour. You can find more information, here: wellscathedral.org.uk

Follow the signs to the town hall/council building in the Market Place in Wells. There is a drinking fountain with fresh water from the spring for filling bottles. We were warned not to use water from the statue fountain as the water is not drinkable.
There are also pulic toilets (open during lockdown as of Aug 2020) in the castle (or is it a palace?) that you can get to without a ticket to the venue. I don't know whether the toilets would be accessible when the grounds are not open though.
