View of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Skyline

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Manhattan Bridge, a suspension bridge reaching over the East River, connects Lower Manhattan at Canal Street to Downtown Brooklyn at Flatbush Avenue Extension. Designed by Leon Moisseiff and built by the Phoenix Bridge Company, it spans 6,855 feet and supports seven lanes of traffic, four subway lines, a pedestrian walkway, and a separate bikeway. Opened in 1909, the bridge was the first to use a Warren truss design. Its design influenced other long suspension bridges in the early 20th century. Enjoy great views and a unique urban running experience.

Balto Statue

Highlight • Monument

Good boy. Balto, the sled dog depicted in this statue in Central Park, is one of the lead dogs that helped carry a life-saving diptheria antitoxin serum to the town of Nome, Alaska, which was at the time experiencing a dangerous diptheria outbreak. This "race" to save lives became the inspiration for Alaska's famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which follows part of the same route Balto and his canine teammates ran.

The Angel of the Waters by Emma Stebbins (1815-1882) was erected as a memorial to the construction of the Croton Aqueduct in New York's Central Park. The bronze statue stands over the upper bowl of the Bethesda Fountain on the street that crosses the park at 72nd Street at the end of the mall, Terrace Drive. It has a height of about 2.6 meters. Stebbins began work on the statue in Rome in 1861 (at the start of the American Civil War). The sculpture was completed in 1868 and inaugurated in 1873. The assignment to her as a woman was a novelty at the time. It was built over the Calvert Vaux basin.

General Sherman Memorial

Highlight • Monument

Start of Central Park and perfect starting point for a walk through the park.

Avoid the hot dog stands, the prices here are almost twice as high as in the rest of the park!
