Gorges de Court

Highlight • Gorge

3km long gorge accompanied by the Birs river. It rolls happily from Court 3km 100m downhill to Mourtier. Tarmac is good, rolls fine.

At the moment still closed to car traffic because a bridge is being repaired, but easily passable by bike.

Carved over centuries by the waters of the Birs, the walls of the Gorges de Court are now a popular destination for climbing and hiking enthusiasts.
The Birs, which has its source in Le Pierre-Pertuis and flows into the Rhine in Birsfelden, forms large gorges above and below Moutier. To pass through the Court gorge, created by the water of the Birs, a footpath is used, passing through man-made footbridges, stairs and even a tunnel. The walls carved into the Graitery rise out of the river, sometimes steeply, sometimes rather flat. And on the excursion to the Court Gorge, hikers can enjoy the coolness caused by the shade of the walls.

The route between Moutier and Delémont is a beautiful route, with mainly decent asphalted surface but there are some places near the industrial areas where the asphalt is a bit rough but overall good a surface. Geological speaking it offers a lot of unusual rock formations creating nice backgrounds for photos. The route and following the River Birse which flows all the way to Basel.

Grotto of Sainte-Colombe

Highlight • Cave

Impressive grotto and pilgrimage site. You should really stop here and enjoy the gentle coolness and fill your bottle with the water from the Karlsquelle (which is said to have healing powers).

Inside the grotto, a small karst spring rises. The water flows as a trickle from a stalagmite into a shallow basin. There is a crucifix under the entrance arch of the grotto, which is dedicated to Saint Columba of Sens, a martyr from the 3rd century. Since the 13th century, the place has been the destination of a pilgrimage that takes place on August 15th. The spring water is said to have miraculous healing powers.

Sorne Gorge Road (Gorges du Pichoux)

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The trip through the Sorne Gorge is worth it both up and down. The change in scenery is dramatic and unexpected. At the upper end of the Sorne Gorge lies the lovely pastureland around Bellelay, a well-known centre for horse breeding.
At the lower end lies Undervelier, in the fairly densely populated Soulce Valley. In between is this gorge, where the Sorne has eaten its way into the limestone in a spectacular way, creating a fantastic landscape.
The road layout in this narrow gorge contributes to this fascinating section, the Sorne bubbles, gurgles and rushes next to the road.
Definitely plan for this if you are travelling in the region!
