Its pillars rise majestically to a height of 65 metres: the Landwasser Viaduct on the Albula Line, which enables the Rhaetian Railway to cross the roaring Landwasser River over a length of 141.7 metres.
In a large curve, the viaduct leads directly into a steep rock face. Today, this breathtaking building is the most photographed subject on the route of the Rhaetian Railway. But the history of the origin of the viaduct is also worth admiring:
The Greek-Swiss engineer Alexander Acatos (1873-1950) was entrusted with the construction of the viaduct. It was also he who later planned the extension of the Zurich main station for the SBB. Under Acatos' guidance, the five limestone pillars with six semi-circular vaults, each 20 meters in span, were made from March 1901.
For cost reasons, a new construction technique was developed for the construction: the pillars were built without external scaffolding. Instead, iron scaffolding was walled into the three longest pillars and adjusted in height as construction progressed. The three iron scaffolds were connected with crossbeams on which electric construction cranes could be mounted. These raised the required building material to the corresponding pillar height.
A mixture of calcareous mortar and sand was used to connect the stones of the pillars. The mortar came from a factory in Unterterzen on Lake Walen and was transported to the Landwasser Viaduct being built on a 0.75 meter construction railway laid out on the future route.
After only about one and a half years of construction, the Landwasser Viaduct was completed in October 1902. Since then, the building fabric has proven to be resilient: the Landwasser Viaduct only had to be slightly repaired in 2009.
Today, the Landwasser Viaduct is still the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway and, as an imposing structure, invites passengers, tourists and locals to take photos.

In the 12th century, a small domain was created around Greifenstein Castle, located in the municipality of Filisur, which came into the possession of the Bishop of Chur in 1394. Latsch was mentioned in documents in 1154, Bergün in 1209 and Stuls in 1270. In 1537 Bergün was able to replace the episcopal rights by paying money and thus gained full sovereignty within the church association. In 1577/1590 it joined the Reformation. The Bergün court also included the neighborhoods of Filisur, Latsch and Stuls.
In addition to livestock farming, traffic over the Albula Pass and mining formed the basis of the town's livelihood. Using explosives - a first in Graubünden road construction at the time - a new road was built through the Bergünerstein in 1696. Mining and smelting of iron ore (hematite) from the lower Val Tisch and Val Plazbi experienced its last heyday around 1840.
When the Albula Railway opened in 1903, the people of Bergün expected a tourist boom that would raise the village to the level of the Upper Engadine spa towns of St. Moritz and Pontresina. The Kurhaus Bergün, built in 1905/1906, is a testimony to these hopes. The fact that the town had to say goodbye to these plans during the First World War is now seen as a lucky coincidence, as this meant that the village was able to preserve its historical townscape in its original form.
The Latsch and Stuls, which became independent political communities in 1851, merged again with Bergün in 1912 and 1921, respectively.
From 2014, negotiations were underway regarding a merger with the municipality of Filisur to form the municipality of Bergün Filisur.
