Hallein Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Hallein is located on the Salzach and the Alpe Adria bike path. The place with a good 20,000 inhabitants offers its visitors in addition to the opportunity to eat some sights. Worth mentioning here are the salt mine with its 2 miner's slides, the Celtic Museum and of course the "Silent Night Museum" dedicated to the composer of the well-known Christmas carol, Franz Xaver Gruber. He lived in Hallein for a long time. The city wall from the year 1300 and the old town are in addition to some castles, ruins and churches worth seeing.

Coming from Salzburg, you should definitely drive over the bridge and into the town center of Golling. There are brightly painted houses, a castle and much more to discover. Numerous inns, cafés, etc. invite you to take a break.

The cycle path along the Salzach River near Weißenbach offers impressive panoramic views of the Northern Limestone Alps. The route runs through an open landscape characterized by meadows and gently slopes toward the striking peaks of the surrounding mountain ranges. The view of the Berchtesgaden Alps as well as parts of the Hagengebirge and Tennengebirge ranges is particularly impressive.

The combination of tranquil nature, clear views of the mountains, and well-developed infrastructure makes this section of the cycle path a particularly attractive experience for cyclists who want to enjoy the alpine landscape in a relaxed atmosphere.

Because bad weather is brewing on the south side of the Alps, I only traveled as far as Hallein. The weather was still summery there and since I was there really early, I was able to do an exercise tour. It was fantastic with the snow in the mountains.

We took advantage of the good weather in the morning and drove to the Bluntau valley.
Short detour on foot to the waterfall (unfortunately no water at the moment 🙈😲) and back up to the Dürrnberg.

The Gollinger waterfall is always worth a visit. The following text is taken from the sign at the beginning of the waterfall path:
The Gollinger waterfall, also known as the Schwarzbachfall, is located at the foot of the Göll massif. At just over a kilometer long, the Schwarzbach offers a mystical spring grotto, a famous waterfall, once seven mills and …
