View of the Salzach River

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Salzach is a right tributary of the Inn River and, at 225 km long, its longest and most water-rich. It flows through the province of Salzburg (Austria) and Bavaria (Germany), is one of the great Alpine rivers, and drains the eastern Hohe Tauern mountains to the north.

The ancient Latin name of the Salzach was Iuvarus or Ivarus. The name came from the Celtic river deity Iuvavo, the divine personification of the Salzach. The Romans later adopted this god's name, slightly Latinized, for the Roman city of Iuvavum.

However, only the lower reaches and the Saalach, which flows into the Salzach, were called Ivarus, since the upper reaches had their own name, Isonta.

The Salzach owes its current name to the salt shipping that operated on the river until the 19th century; the historical center of salt shipping was Laufen. Until after 1800, the river was generally called Salza (i.e., like a Lower Austrian-Styrian river).

On this bridge you should definitely use the right side, otherwise you will have problems turning onto the path to the Salzach.

Return from B'hofen in the rain. I'm totally clean again.. 🤗

Today turned out differently than planned. Since the Tauernschleuse is closed for construction, a bus shuttle is being used via the Tauern Autobahn. Therefore, today we only cycled about 30km 🚲, hiked for 3 hours🥾, and took a 3-hour bus shuttle🚌. The weather is warm🌤 and 28°C. Couldn't be better.

A little shopping trip by bike...by car 🚗 it's pure stress in our area at the moment 😳😱

Last leisurely farewell tour on the Tauern Cycle Path, always along the Salzach towards Salzburg. Unfortunately, the Salzach was no longer as beautifully blue as usual due to the storm, but you can cycle here comfortably and without any effort. 😊💯👍
I'm already looking forward to next year!
