View of Schloss Stein

Highlight • Viewpoint

Coming from Lienz you can easily overlook the view and yet it invites you to linger.

At the end of the Carinthian Gailtal, where the path splits towards Gailberg or Mauthen, lies the imposing and impressive Gailtal Cathedral. The parish church in Kötschach was dedicated to “Our Lady”. The church was built on the remains of a medieval predecessor, which is why it had an irregular floor plan with side aisles of different widths. The given structure had to be taken into account, which is why the southern aisle is significantly smaller.

Another unusual thing is that you go down into this church (staircase exit). In fact, when it was built, stairs led upwards as usual, but a devastating flood flooded the church with so much material that it was decided to reverse the access to the otherwise largely intact building!

Please also go into the church; the Rococo frescoes, for example, or the vault covered with delicate looping patterns, as well as the wall paintings depicting the Virgin Mary, are well worth seeing! The Gailtal Cathedral is undoubtedly exceptional and remarkable in many ways.

Southern ascent of Gailbergsattel

Highlight • Mountain Pass

There is a bend at the bottom, which the mountain grants you, and then it goes more or less straight towards the summit. Unfortunately there is no pass sign to celebrate, which again underlines the transit character. The gradient remains fairly moderate and, despite the length, you get to the top quite quickly and easily.

Gailberg Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

can actually be driven well at any time because it has no steeper ramps and can be driven a lot in the shade.

Northern ascent to Gailbergsattel from Oberdrauburg

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

The northern ascent is easy and steady. The gradient remains in the single digits throughout. Ten hairpin bends lead to the Gailberg Saddle. 350 meters of elevation gain are achieved over almost seven kilometers. The pass is quite busy. However, the well-maintained road has plenty of room for both racing bikes and cars.

Highlight • Historical Site

Oberdrauburg has a very beautiful, small and historic center with a market, a water well and many beautiful inns. 100 meters from the market, the Drava flows through the village.
