View of the Salzach River

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Salzach is a right tributary of the Inn River and, at 225 km long, its longest and most water-rich. It flows through the province of Salzburg (Austria) and Bavaria (Germany), is one of the great Alpine rivers, and drains the eastern Hohe Tauern mountains to the north.

The ancient Latin name of the Salzach was Iuvarus or Ivarus. The name came from the Celtic river deity Iuvavo, the divine personification of the Salzach. The Romans later adopted this god's name, slightly Latinized, for the Roman city of Iuvavum.

However, only the lower reaches and the Saalach, which flows into the Salzach, were called Ivarus, since the upper reaches had their own name, Isonta.

The Salzach owes its current name to the salt shipping that operated on the river until the 19th century; the historical center of salt shipping was Laufen. Until after 1800, the river was generally called Salza (i.e., like a Lower Austrian-Styrian river).

View of the Hochkönig

Highlight • Viewpoint

Here you pedal on asphalt strips that cut through the green meadows that caress the surrounding Alpine reliefs. Among them all, you can clearly distinguish the Hochkönig: it reaches almost 3,000 meters above sea level so even in summer its summit part is often dusted with snow.

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

It is a beautiful high plateau with a good bike path and little traffic. When you come down in Schwarzach, you can go straight to the Bräustüberl.

The parish church of St. Nicholas is picturesquely above Dienten in front of the mighty Hochkönig massif. The church still largely has its Gothic shape, only the Romanesque tower was later given a baroque curved helmet.

Unfortunately there was too much main road.
The last 25 km were great.
