St. Ruprecht Church (Villach-St. Ruprecht)

Highlight • Religious Site

In the northeast corner of the town of St. Ruprecht - a district of Villach - stands the church of the same name. Around the year 860, King Ludwig the German donated several farms that stood on this site to the then Archbishop of Salzburg. The deed of donation also contains the first written mention of a church located here. In 1195, a priest is mentioned for the first time and in 1616 there is a written reference that the church or parish belongs to the Ljubljana cathedral chapter. Finally, in 1773, the name "St. Ruprecht im Moos" is mentioned for the first time.
In the following period, several written mentions of the parish appeared until finally in 1956 the parish seat was moved to Maria Landskron and this church was "downgraded" to a branch church. Extensive renovation work was carried out in 1980, 2002 and 2022, during which the interior in particular was restored. On the outside of the nave there are several old inscriptions and epitaphs. Overall - especially because of the history - it is an impressive place.
