Small monuments in Austria: What Marterln mean
The small monuments in Austria tell of battles won and wars lost, of family feuds and much more.

Göttweig Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The impressive Benedictine monastery was built in 1083 for a canonical community and handed over to the Benedictines eleven years later. By the middle of the 18th century, the magnificent building was made what today proudly towers at 422 meters above the Danube. The monastery has also been a World Heritage Site since 2000.

There is a museum in the imperial wing of the abbey. After the tour, you can dine in the abbey restaurant.

You can find the opening times of the museum, the restaurant and services here: stiftgoettweig.at/site/info/oeffnungszeiten

Abbey church

Highlight • Religious Site

Collegiate Church / Monastery Church of Göttweig Abbey
The core of the nave of the collegiate church is Romanesque (from the time the monastery was built; a porch from the 11th century has been proven). The reconstruction of the Romanesque structure showed an axial bend.
The early Gothic presbytery, which is raised above the crypt, was built between 1401 and 1430. In the 17th century and - according to a plan by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to redesign the facade from the first third of the 18th century - the church was largely converted to Baroque style. The stucco work (1665 to 1681) was made by northern Italian masters.
The high altar painting of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven (1694) is by Andreas Wolff; the high altar (with statues of St. Peter, Paul, Gregory, Altmann, Catherine, Barbara and the Mother of God Mary), which forms an ensemble with the pulpit and parts of the organ facade, by Hermann Schmidt (1639). The inlaid choir stalls were made by Franz Staudinger in 1766; the two imperial chairs (now used as ambo) were probably made somewhat earlier in the same workshop.
In the eight side chapels of the nave, two altarpieces by Martin Johann Schmidt can be seen (Altmann altar and Benedictus altar in the southern row of chapels).
In the summer sacristy, attached to the south of the presbytery, are the former high altar of the collegiate church and in the treasury there are vestments and liturgical equipment, including special features such as a Gothic host dove, an Art Nouveau chalice and baroque leather chasubles.
The original entrance to the collegiate church was through a south portal (with an inscription and niche Madonna from 1668), which was walled up in the 18th century and reopened in 2010 when barrier-free access was built.
The double-tower façade was only built between 1750 and 1755; the tower helmets were not built, so the provisional blunt church tower tent roofs remained. The lower windows of the towers and the clocks of the south tower are also only painted on.
