Yera ghost station

Highlight • Monument

The ghost station of Yera is abandoned and in ruins, it is a station that although the works were practically finished, never was inaugurated and was the last to be built of the Santander-Mediterranean railway project. The platforms were finished although the tracks were never laid.
Next to the station there is a small rectangular building that was the old warehouse. And all this set is located on a large concrete platform and a large wall lightened by
32 arches 50 meters high. All of this with spectacular views of the valleys of Pasiegos.

El Morro Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Small tunnel of 43 meters. The first one you meet if you come from the Yera station, it passes without difficulty and no light is necessary because it is very small, and it is located a few meters from the "El Morro" tunnel, much longer and in which it is artificial light necessary to cross it.

El Empeñadiro Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

This tunnel is the third that we find if we start the visit from the Yera Station, and its length is 130 meters with a small curve to the left. No additional lighting is necessary since the finish is perfectly visible from its mouth, and its firm is quite good to pass without problems.

El Majoral Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

It is the fourth tunnel that we find if we start the visit from the Yera Station, it is the tunnel next to the prison and the one that is just before the Túnel de la Engaña.
It measures 285 meters in length and is curved, it is the worst in terms of the firm ground, it is quite irregular and with a stream that runs through the middle (during the rainy season) and also in this is the most necessary is a light of support (flashlight better than the light of the telephone) to pass due to the uneven floor with loose stones and with infiltrations of water through the wall, which makes some noise. If you don't have electricity, if you're apprehensive or don't feel like it, to your right, going a few steps down the road that leads to the prison, there is a path that goes around it and takes you to the other side without any problems.

Engaña Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

The Engaña Tunnel is a long railway tunnel of almost 17 km. (6,976 meters exactly, measured starting from the South mouth) which is located between the municipalities of Vega de Pas (Cantabria) and Pedrosa de Valdeporres (Burgos), with a width of 8 meters designed to accommodate two roads and a height of 6, 5 m., and takes its name from the nearby Engaña River.

It is part of the Santander-Mediterranean railway project that sought to link the Cantabrian Sea with the Mediterranean and which was never used. A project that was projected to be completed in 4 and a half years was extended for 17 years, being abandoned at the Yera Station, which was the last thing that was done before its abandonment.

Currently it is almost completely collapsed inside (around km 2,800) and since 1999 it has not been possible to drive through it or cross it. At the northern mouth you can see that the water infiltrates from the river seeps through its walls and falls even in a cascade. The construction materials were quite poor and it has degraded very quickly.

Old prison for prisoners who worked on the Santander-Mediterranean railway line.
Right now it is in a state of collapse although you can move around inside carefully, there are even stairs to go down to the lower floor but they are in poor condition and you can go down very carefully to move around the lower floor.
