Currently, it is a neo-Gothic tunnel, under which there is a street, so you can reach it only from the top - along Słowicza Avenue, or along ul. St. John the Baptist from a distance of about 10 meters.
The Świętojańska Gate (also known as the Szczecin Gate) was erected in the 50s of the 15th century and was originally preceded by a foregate with a drawbridge, a throat and an internal gate. She defended access to the city from the side of Szczecin.
Before 1720, the earth and water fortifications in front of the gate were dismantled by Prince Moritz von Anhalt Dessau. He located there a training ground for the army.
From 1721, the superstructure of the gate served as a penitentiary, while from 1820 there was an institution for the mentally ill.
Later, in 1842, the gate was completely pulled down and a pointed tunnel was built in its place. Currently, the remains of the gate, or rather a foregate, can be seen from the street and from its top, because Słowicza Avenue runs there. The tunnel runs along ul. st. Jana street and there is no pedestrian crossing under it.
