Biebrza River

Highlight (Segment) • River

This section of road which runs along the Biebrza River is gravel. As cars pass regularly, the road is bumpy. Still, the views of the river are superb.

Biebrza National Park

Danger! The cycle path is flooded for several kilometers in spring and early summer and is not passable. Suddenly there is knee-deep (and more) water and a long drive back and detour is required. Not everyone was lucky that a canoe rental company with a vehicle kindly bridged the passage.

A large lowland, the Biebrza Valley, with a length of over 100 kilometers forms the main part of the national park. This valley is filled with a layer of peat several meters thick. With an area of approx. 90 km², it is the largest and most original peat bog area in Central Europe. The Biebrza River, 152.5 kilometers long within the park, is the central element of the national park. The Biebrza is characterized by its typical lowland character and meanders freely through the national park. Numerous meanders and backwaters form the course of the river. The width of the Biebrza river bed varies from a few meters in the northern basin to several tens of meters in the lower course of the river. The most important natural monument of the park is the Red Swamp (Polish: Czerwone Bagno), which is under the strictest protection.
