Saint Stephen Parish Church - Hingene

Highlight • Religious Site

The old, oriented church, adapted and enlarged several times, but with the appearance of 1687 (according to old drawings largely in Baroque style), was demolished in 1898, with the exception of the tower, the choir and part of the transept. New church with integration of the old elements, designed by J. Caluwaers in 1894. The foundation stone was laid on 5/12/1898. In use from 1900. Church consecrated in 1906.

d'Ursel Provincial Park

Highlight • Castle

Around the castle lies a domain that, together with the Hingenebroekpolder and Schellandpolder, once measured around 300 hectares. The park around the castle is around 40 hectares and is connected to the polders that are part of the Bornem silence area via the Notelaerdreef. In the park you will find yourself in an oasis of peace. The domain is open to the public and is eagerly visited by walkers and joggers.

Historic site Fort Sint-Margriet

Highlight • Historical Site

Take a seat on the couch and go back in time and look around you...
The Fort Sint-Margriet, which was built at the end of the 16th century, once stood where the Zeesluis van Wintam is now. Several fortresses were built along the Scheldt and its tributaries during the war between the Spaniards and the Dutch troops. The fortress was built with rubble from the destroyed church and rectory of Nattehaasdonk in 1566, dedicated to Saint Margaret. Hence the name Fort Sint-Margriet.

Strategic location:
The confluence of Scheldt and Rupel was a strategic location for the fortress. Moreover, it was perfectly protected behind the Wiel (= flooded polder), opposite the castle of Rupelmonde and the toll house in Schelle. The fort was only accessible via the water and two dikes.

Decay:
In 1706 Fort Sint-Margriet was taken by troops of the United Provinces. It remained of strategic importance, but little was invested in it.
From 1745 to 1747 it was occupied by a French garrison, which flooded the hinterland of the fort and left a destructive trail on the retreat.
At the end of the 18th century, the fortress had completely fallen into ruin. It would be one last time during the Boer War, when a small army of Brigands gathered there in October 1798. After a short fierce battle, however, they quickly lost out.
In the 19th century the last remnants disappeared and in 1997 everything was dredged away for the construction of the new sea lock Wintam / Zeekanaal Scheldt - Brussels.
