Château Licot

Highlight • Castle

Before the castle stood on this site, the old farm, Du Maugré (Cursed Place), used to be here in 1465 owned by Jehan de Henry of Nimes. This farm remained in the possession of the de Henry family for a hundred years. In the 17th century it passed into the hands of the Martin family. In 1745 Michel Licot, ironmaster of Vireux, bought the grounds where the castle now stands, with the park and the blast furnace.
For many years this region had a high economic development thanks to the mining of iron ore. Together with the iron ore exploitation, an iron and steel industry developed in Nismes. Between 1864 and 1890, the farm was transformed into the castle we know today, with August Licot, co-founder of the factories “La Providence”, as client, after the closure of the blast furnace. Later, a park and pond were laid out. This successful entrepreneurial family, Licot, was the textbook example of the wealth that the iron industry brought to Nismes in the nineteenth century.

Quarry Prospèr

Highlight • Climb

“Carrière Prosper” is the name of the place that now houses around twenty climbing routes ranging from level 4C to 7A (more for experienced climbers). Adapting the quarry took around five hundred hours of work. “We have to remove the unstable stones, carefully inspect the quality of the rock and possibly fix it, and only at the end do we start drilling holes to install what we call ‘the pins’, i.e. the belay points,” explains Koen Hauchecorne, head of rocks at the Flemish Climbing Federation (this federation manages this site and a dozen others, and it’s more or less the same for its French-speaking counterpart).

Highlight • Religious Site

Treignes is a town on the Viroin in the Ardennes.
Treignes is also called the 'museum village' because it has no less than five museums and several other tourist attractions. The cobbled streets, the fountain and the tranquility make the village worth a visit.

Castle of the Counts of Hamal in Vierves-sur-Viroin

Based on a fortress and a farm of medieval origin, the emblematic building spreads its slender silhouette over the landscape of Vierves-sur-Viroin - private property.

The 'Comtes de Hamal', who owned the estate between 1567 and 1852, extensively renovated the old medieval fortress and farm and reduced the defensive functions of the building to a base.
The facade of the house, in classical style, is pierced with large windows. This “modern” home is flanked by the so-called Attila Tower, whose spherical roof pushes the castle into the landscape, while its large windows provide new vantage points.
In the second half of the 19th century, works related to the pleasure continued: the two courtyards were joined to form a large terrace opening onto the valley.
The garden is below, the tree-lined ring that splits the ramparts...
