Motte Tower and the Michiels Family Chapel, Kessenich

Highlight • Historical Site

The motte tower and burial chapel of the Michiels family are located opposite the church in Kessenich in the Kerkstraat.
At this topographically favourable location, there may have been a fortification as early as the 10th century. The oldest visible remains are of an octagonal tower castle from the 12th century that once formed the centre of power of the lordship of Kessenich. The hill was artificially raised and was surrounded by a moat.
In 1899, Baron Willem-Jozef Michiels of Kessenich built the burial chapel of the Michiels family on top of the hill. Tombstones of the various family members who were buried there were placed in the inner walls.

Palace Kitchens

Highlight • Historical Site

At the time of the monastery in Thorn, which was closed in 1797 during the French rule, this building was part of the abbey complex. Apart from the abbey church, this is one of the few buildings that remain of this complex. This building, probably originally built in the 16th century, housed the kitchens of the palace or court of the queen abbess. In its current form, the building dates from around 1790, when it was renovated. At that time, the ground floor included a large cooking kitchen, as well as four smaller rooms that served as a sink, storage areas for dishes, food, etc. The upper floor had approximately the same layout. Here were five large rooms and a small room. The building has a gable roof covered with slates.
