De Biesbosch National Park

Highlight • Natural

De Biesbosch National Park is a freshwater tidal area. There are only a few of them in the world. In the Biesbosch there is therefore ebb and flow, which is unique in a freshwater area. And for 600 years, the tides have shaped this landscape of water, reed beds and creeks. Not only the beaver feels at home here, but the area is also popular with many species of birds. The shallow waters rich in fish attract impressive species such as osprey and white-tailed eagle.

De Biesbosch National Park

Highlight • Natural

National Park De Biesbosch is on the list of protected nature reserves. De Biesbosch is partly used for agriculture and there is a lot of (water) recreation. Specially constructed reservoirs provide for the storage of clean surface water.
Since 1994, De Biesbosch has been a national park, where work is now in full swing to give more space to the rivers.

Biesbosch National Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Biesbosch was originally polder land, but after a storm surge, the area transformed into an inland sea. Water from the Maas and Waal rivers transformed it into a freshwater delta. Sand and river silt formed sandbanks, which were particularly suitable for rushes. Hence the name 'Biesbosch'.

When the Haringvliet inlet was later closed off, the large differences between high and low tides disappeared. Nature was given free rein, and the area became wilder. Today, sea eagles and ospreys breed here again. A truly special sight!
