Tenellaplas Visitor Centre

Visitor center Tenellaplas

The visitor center of the 'Zuid-Hollands Landschap' (South Holland Landscape) is the gateway to the dunes of Voorne. A good start for your walk. Are you looking for more background information about which animals live in the area? Or which plants are blooming at that time? The hostesses and gentlemen can tell you what you can see where at that time.

This area is one of the most species-rich dune areas in Western Europe. Here you will find almost two thirds of the Dutch breeding bird species and more than half of all wild plant species.

Here you can explore various walking and cycling routes or pick up a brochure about this special area. In the spring you can visit the visitor center and go on a beautiful orchid excursion, in the summer children can catch aquatic animals and in the autumn you can go on an autumn expedition.

Voorne Dunes

Highlight • Natural Monument

A very varied nature reserve in Rockanje with forests, wet dune valleys, thickets and dry sandy slopes. In contrast to the dune areas in the north of the Netherlands, where the dunes are several thousand years old, we are dealing with relatively young dunes on Voorne. The oldest are around 800 years old, but new dunes are still forming on the beach today.

Due to this young age, the dune sand is rich in lime. Plant growth has adapted to this and offers an enormous variety of species. In the dune area you can encounter large grazers, Exmoor ponies and Galloway cattle. These help the Zuid-Hollands Landschap to keep the dune area open.

Open-Air Museum De Duinhuisjes

Highlight • Historical Site

The open-air museum "De Duinhuisjes" has four original dune farms from the years 1850 to 1910. The houses are furnished in the style typical of the time.

There is also a pigsty, a chicken coop, an open wagon shed, wells and a wash house. All this in a beautiful garden with fruit trees, colorful flowers and some beehives.

During the season there are special children's afternoons, various markets and Living History days where some volunteers are dressed in traditional costume.
