Washhouse in Prémontré (Rue du lavoir)

Highlight • Structure

A wash house is a basin supplied with water generally of natural origin, the primary purpose of which is to allow laundry to be rinsed after washing it. It is most often public, free or paid depending on the municipality, but can be private, attached to a single house or a single farm and can be made available to neighbors for a fee.

Contrary to a very widespread representation, the washerwomen did not go there most often to wash the linen, but to rinse it there. Going to the washhouse was indeed the last step before drying. Since washing consumed only a few buckets of water, it could take place in homes or laundry rooms where laundry would accumulate before the "big wash", but rinsing required large amounts of clean water, only available in streams or in a captured source. However, there are washhouses with several basins, the upstream basin serving as a rinser, those downstream as a washhouse (washing the laundry itself) or even a drinking trough. (Wikipedia)

Prémontré Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The Abbey of Prémontré, nestled west of Laon in the heart of a wooded and hilly environment, was founded in 1120 by Norbert of Xanten. Former mother abbey of the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré, this historic site retains a peaceful atmosphere, away from the main roads.

Unfortunately, there is no cycle path along the canal here yet.
The path to the left before the bridge is a dead end.

This path leads nowhere!

Highlight • Other

This route was suggested in Komoot as a cycle path along the canal - but it is a dead end after the next lock.

This medieval gate, built in the 13th century, was part of the impressive fortifications of Coucy-le-Château, a town once famous for its castle and its motto: "I am neither king, nor prince, nor count, I am the lord of Coucy ". The Porte de Laon is a massive structure with two round towers and an arched passage, defended by a drawbridge, a double portcullis and a barbican. You can admire the architecture and military devices of this ancient bastion, as well as the panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside.

War memorial

Highlight • Other

On the monument is carved a soldier holding in his right hand a sword on which it is indicated: "I am not king, not prince, not duke, not count, also I am the sire of Coucy". The soldier is standing on the castle of Coucy.
Dit was eigenlijk de bekende leuze van de Heren van Coucy!

Château de Coucy

Highlight • Castle

GET TO KNOW THE CHÂTEAU DE COUCY
The castle of a powerful family. In 1214, Enguerrand III de Coucy took part in the victory of the Battle of Bouvines, near Lille, the first major European battle and cement of nascent national feeling. In the 14th century, Enguerrand VII de Coucy, a great diplomat, turned it into a sumptuous palace.

A decor that survives its disappearance. The first known representation of the iconographic theme of the Neuf Preuses, sculpted on a monumental fireplace fitted out in Coucy by Louis d'Orléans around 1400 and published in the 16th century by Androuet du Cerceau, inspired in the 19th century the architect Viollet-le-Duc to realize the fireplace in the great room of the Château de Pierrefonds.

Four centuries of destruction. Dismantled in 1652, the castle was used as a stone quarry until its acquisition by Louis-Philippe in 1829, then by the State in 1848. Several architects, including Viollet-le-Duc, succeeded each other to preserve the ruins. During the First World War, the four towers and the keep were destroyed by the German army.
