Description

If you're looking for an easy, high-reward hike that delivers incredible wildlife viewing, the Manatee Viewing Area – Blue Spring State Park loop from Blue Spring State Park is absolutely worth your time. This 2.3-mile (3.6 km) hike, rated easy with a minimal 49 feet (15 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 56 minutes, making it perfect for families, casual strollers, or anyone seeking a peaceful encounter with Florida's gentle giants.

What to expect on Manatee Viewing Area – Blue Spring State Park loop from Blue Spring State Park

Expect a serene journey along mostly flat, paved walkways and elevated wooden boardwalks that hug the crystal-clear Blue Spring Run. The path is shaded by a lush canopy of ancient oaks and hickory trees, creating a beautiful natural tunnel. The highlight is undoubtedly the Manatee Viewing Area, especially from mid-November to March, where you can observe hundreds of manatees in their natural habitat, along with various fish and turtles. The trail culminates at the spring head overlook, a vibrant hub of activity, before offering glimpses of the St. Johns River. This route is more of a peaceful stroll than a strenuous hike, making it suitable for all ages and mobility levels, including those with strollers or wheelchairs.

Planning your visit

The best time to experience this trail is during the cooler months, from mid-November to March, when manatees flock to the spring's consistent 72°F water. The park can get very busy, especially during peak manatee season, so arriving early is highly recommended to secure parking. While swimming is allowed in the spring run during warmer months, it's closed during manatee season to protect the animals, making the boardwalk your primary way to enjoy the spring. There is a park entrance fee, so be prepared for that upon arrival.
