St. Jakob Church (Vötting, Freising)

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Jakob is the parish church of the Freising district of Vötting. The parish also includes the branch church of St. Ulrich in Hohenbachern and several smaller chapels.
Originally, the monastery church of the Weihenstephan monastery served as the parish church. In 1158, the parish then received its own small church on the western slope of the Weihenstephan mountain. The apostle James the Elder was chosen as the patron saint of the church. With the dissolution of the Weihenstephan monastery during the secularization in 1803, the monastery church was again designated as the parish church. The church of St. Jakob was closed in October 1803 and then demolished. Since the monastery church was also demolished in 1811 or 1812, the parish only had the church in the smaller neighboring town of Hohenbachern at its disposal. It was planned to dissolve the parish and incorporate it into the parish of St. Georg in Freising. However, due to resistance from the parish vicarage and the ordinariate, this was not implemented.
In 1851, King Maximilian II Joseph ordered a reorganization of the parish with the new name Weihenstephan-Vötting and the construction of a new church and rectory. The costs of the construction were borne by the state. In 1854, work began on a plot of land north of the town center. The architects who were primarily involved were Franz Xaver Beyschlag and Karl Klumpp the Younger (both employees of Friedrich von Gärtner). The church was consecrated in June 1857 by Bishop Gregor von Scherr. For cost reasons, the church was not painted during construction. The building received this on the 50th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone in 1904. When Vötting was incorporated into Freising, the name of the parish changed. Since 1937 it has been called the city parish of St. Jakob Freising.

Here, too, one can enjoy the wonderful gardens of Weihenstephan.
There are more gardens to admire on the other side of the brewery building.

Ruin of a baroque round church of the Asam brothers from the 18th century above a hillside source, which according to legend was "awakened" by Freisinger's patron saint Korbinian around 770 and is still splashing in a gallery today. Above it on the ridge was the monastery of Weihenstephan, a nucleus of the Christianization of Europe. There are still rumors (or hopes) that Charlemagne was born here, but there is no evidence. In any case, a very historical place in the middle of the lush forest of the Weihenstephan southern slope.
