Sheen Cross, Richmond Park

Highlight • Trail

Richmond Park is the largest of London’s Royal Parks at 2,360 acres (955 hectares) in size. Historically the hunting grounds, or the reserve of the monarch, the park is now open to the public and is now a marvellous recreation area complete with deer and a wide range of wild birds.

Here at Sheen Cross, you are at the main intersection of roads and trails within the park. There are wide open spaces with good views, trees, and the deer abound the area here. The traffic will be light as access to Richmond Park is limited.

Deer in Richmond Park

Highlight • Forest

Richmond Park is a wild and rural landscape just a stone’s throw from central London. The largest of the city’s Royal Parks, Richmond was created by Charles I in the 17th century as a deer park and you can observe herds to this day.

The park has many ancient trees and is home to a number of species of fungi, birds, beetles, bats, grasses, and wildflowers. Richmond Park has many buildings of architectural or historic interest, including the Grade I-listed White Lodge which was formerly a royal residence and is now the Royal Ballet School.

Tamsin Trail, Richmond Park

Highlight • Cycleway

The Tamsin Trail is easily my favourite part of Richmond Park to cycle. It's much quieter than the main outer loop, which has become a bit of a car park. Enjoy the fine off-road trails, suitable for most bike types, but beware of runners and dog walkers at busy times.

Thames Street in Sudbury-on-Thames has a wide pavement and great views of the river. Look across the river to Sunbury Locks and upstream to the weir. The Thames Path long distance walking trail follows the opposite bank here and the Walled Garden is behind you.
