Description
If you're looking for a quick, high-reward escape into Hawaii's lush coastal beauty, the Onomea Bay Viewpoint loop from Pāpa‘ikou is an easy 0.9-mile (1.4 km) hiking route with just 88 feet (27 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 23 minutes to complete. It's perfect for anyone wanting a taste of the Big Island's wild side without a major time commitment, offering a vibrant mix of jungle and ocean scenery.
What to expect on Onomea Bay Viewpoint loop from Pāpa‘ikou
What makes this route special is its journey through varied terrain. You'll transition from paved sections to dirt paths that plunge into dense rainforest, where giant ferns and tropical plants create an immersive 'jungle feel.' Keep an eye out for spectacular ocean views and picturesque coves as you make your way to the Onomea Bay Viewpoint, offering stunning overlooks of the bay. While generally easy, some sections, particularly the 'Donkey Trail,' can be steep and very slippery after rain due to Hawaii's distinctive red dirt, so sturdy shoes with good traction are a must.
Planning your visit
Accessing the trail is straightforward from the scenic Old Mamalohoa Highway, which itself offers beautiful rainforest views. Be aware that the dirt paths can become muddy, rocky, and slippery, especially after rainfall. It's wise to apply bug spray due to mosquitoes. For your safety, do not swim in Onomea Bay due to dangerous currents and the presence of parasites in the stream waters.
