Description
If you are looking for a high-reward, low-effort hike with spectacular views, the Deadmans Hill loop from Deadmans Hill is an excellent choice. This easy 3.1-mile (4.9 km) hiking route features 377 feet (115 metres) of elevation gain and takes around 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete, making it perfect for a quick outing or a family adventure, especially when the fall colors are at their peak.
What to expect on Deadmans Hill loop from Deadmans Hill
The trail offers a varied journey through the Jordan River Valley. You will start with a noticeable downhill section for about half a mile, leading you into the valley floor. The path then winds through hardwood forests and along ridges, with some sections potentially muddy at the bottom, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Around mile 1.2, you will catch views of Deadman's Ridge, and in early to mid-summer, you might even spot wild berries. The return portion involves a steady, but not overly steep, uphill climb back to the panoramic overlook, which provides one of the most beloved viewing points in the Lower Peninsula.
Planning your visit
The Deadmans Hill trailhead is easily accessible and offers vault toilets. There are no entry or vehicle fees required to hike this loop. The trail is open year-round, but for the most comfortable hiking experience and to avoid snow, plan your visit between May and November. Early October is particularly popular for witnessing the vibrant fall foliage, so expect more visitors during that time.
