Description
If you're looking for one of the most popular trails in Ecola State Park, the Indian Beach Trail – Indian Beach loop from Ecola State Park is an easy hiking route that delivers big on coastal views. This 3.9-mile (6.2 km) loop, with 723 feet (220 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 1 hours and 53 minutes to complete, making it a fantastic option for a high-payoff outing without a huge time commitment.
What to expect on Indian Beach Trail – Indian Beach loop from Ecola State Park
The trail starts by winding through dense, old-growth coastal forest, primarily Sitka spruce, creating an almost "Jurassic Park"-like atmosphere with lush ferns underfoot. You'll encounter uphill sections, and the path can be muddy, especially after rain, with exposed roots common. As you near Indian Beach, the forest opens up to reveal panoramic coastal vistas, including dramatic sea cliffs and impressive sea stacks. Keep an eye out for the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, visible offshore, and Haystack Rock from the Ecola Point trailhead. This route is perfect if you want diverse scenery and stunning viewpoints without an overly strenuous climb.
Planning your visit
The trail can be muddy, particularly during winter and spring or after rainfall, so plan your visit accordingly if you prefer drier conditions. The rerouted path, opened in late 2020, now heads more inland in some sections compared to the original cliffside route. Parking is available at Ecola Point, but it can fill up, especially on busy days. No specific permits or fees are mentioned beyond standard park entry.
