Description
If you're looking for a refreshing escape from the Las Vegas Strip, the Clark County Wetlands Park – Las Vegas Wash loop from Whitney is an excellent choice for touring cyclists. This easy 9.6-mile (15.5 km) route, with a gentle 205 feet (62 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in just over an hour, offering a quick and rewarding ride through a surprising desert oasis. It's perfect for anyone seeking a relaxed pedal with plenty of nature and scenic views.
What to expect on Clark County Wetlands Park – Las Vegas Wash loop from Whitney
This route takes you through the heart of the Clark County Wetlands Park, a vibrant green space that feels a world away from the surrounding Mojave Desert. You'll cycle along the Las Vegas Wash, enjoying lush wetlands filled with tall reeds, diverse plants, and trees. Keep an eye out for the abundant birdlife, as over 310 species call this park home, along with coyotes and roadrunners. While much of the trail is wide and smoothly paved, be aware of some expansion joint cracks that can cause jolts. The northern section, Wetlands Loop North, is fully paved, but if you venture onto the final 2.5 miles of Wetlands Loop South, you'll encounter unpaved sections. Expect some fun "roller coaster" hills and short, steep ascents, particularly on the north side of the Wash, which add a moderate challenge to an otherwise easy ride.
Planning your visit
The Clark County Wetlands Park is easily accessible from trailheads like Whitney. Parking is generally available, but it's always wise to arrive earlier in the day, especially on weekends, to secure a spot. Remember that shade is limited, so bring plenty of water, particularly during warmer months, to stay hydrated. The park is open year-round, but spring and fall offer the most pleasant cycling temperatures. While bikes are welcome on the Wetlands Loop Trail, they are prohibited in the Nature Preserve area, so be sure to check signage.
