Svindersvik Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Beautiful modern bridge.
Svindersviksbron is an arch bridge over Svindersviken in Nacka municipality. The bridge will connect central Nacka with Kvarnholmen, where extensive new housing development has been underway since 2006. Together with the Ryssberg tunnel, the bridge is part of the Kvarnholmen connection. Construction started in May 2013 and the entire connection was completed in June 2016. The Svindersvik Bridge is sometimes referred to as the "Kvarnholm Bridge". However, Kvarnholmsbron is an older bridge, opened in 1924.

Three Crowns Mill

Highlight • Monument

Mill "Three Crowns" was founded on May 10, 1897 with a share capital of SEK 700,000 at the time. The driving force was the wholesaler Carl August Engström whose company, Aug. Engström & Co, was the country's largest flour importer. He himself became managing director of the new company.

The site for the new mill had been carefully selected, a suitable plot had been found on Hästholmen (later renamed Kvarnholmen) opposite Djurgården. Construction began in April 1897. They had to blast away 14,000 cubic meters of stone from the 16 meter high mountain. The blasted stone was then used as fill material to move the shoreline out 15 meters and build a port area along the shore of Saltsjön. On February 5, 1898, it was possible to celebrate the topping-out ceremony.

The completed mill building was 84 meters long and six stories high, with towers on the gables rising to 8 stories, 38 meters above the ground. The plant had four sections: granary, clearing house, mill and flour store. The process was largely automated and the building was adapted for this: grain in at the eastern end and flour out at the western end.

The mill was operated in two 12-hour shifts Monday-Saturday, and the monthly salary in the first years for a mill worker was SEK 75. In 1911 the mill was switched from steam to electricity, and in 1912 a new silo and an office building were built adjacent to the east of the mill building (see Silo III and Old Mill Office).
