The original castle was built by the bishops of Freising in 1202. In 1511, the castle was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. Bishop Phillip let them rebuild. In the castle courtyard stood an impressive four-edged tower, whose ground plan was restored. Today, the castle is home to one of the finest museums in Slovenia, with archaeological, historical, cultural, artistic, scientific and ethnological collections. Visitors can also visit the excellently preserved 16th century farmhouse, the Škopar House (Škoparjeva hiša)
