Foothills Views

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this spot on 63rd, you get great views over a large field of the Boulder Foothills. This spot is especially nice in the fall when the leaves are changing and the mountains and hills have a light dusting of snow. If coming from downtown Boulder, these views really help you feel like you're headed out of town.

Maxwell Lake Park

Highlight • Lake

If you're looking for an excuse to pull over for a minute — or just a nice patch of nature on your ride — Maxwell Lake Park fills the bill. It has a small lake and an unpaved walking path (so you'll need to put your bike away when you walk around it).

Pine Brook Road (Gravel)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Pine Brook Road is a steep, twisting, hard-packed gravel road just south of Lee Hill Drive off of Wagon Wheel Gap Road. This is a quiet residential area, so please be courteous of the folks who live there as you enjoy some great gravel very close to town.

After veering off of Lefthand Canyon onto James Canyon Drive, you can enjoy a long climb up (or fast, fun descent down) a road with a wide shoulder between steep cliffs and hills and a creek. Although this isn't a particularly long climb up to Jamestown it's consistent, so finally reaching Jamestown (and the Mercantile) is a welcome treat.

Jamestown Mercantile Café

Highlight • Cafe

The Jamestown Mercantile is a cute, cyclist-friendly cafe in a historic building. There is outside seating both right out front and across the road in the park. They have an expansive menu (jamestownmercantile.com/menu) and live music and events in the warmer months.

Lefthand Canyon (36 to Olde Stage)

Highlight (Segment) • Canyon

The initial section of Lefthand Canyon from 36 is easier than the upper sections and a great place to warm up the legs for some climbing! As you follow Lefthand Creek, crossing over it a few times, be on the lookout for deer and other wildlife (especially on the descent!), along this scenic road.

Nelson Road (63rd Street to Highway 36)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Nelson Road between 63rd Street to Highway 36 takes you over rolling hills past fields with horses and cows, with great views of the Foothills and Lefthand Canyon if headed east to west. You also ride past the Table Mountain Antenna Fields Sites, which are two impressive twin antennas sitting just west of 63rd street.

What to expect on Foothills Views – Jamestown Mercantile Café loop from Gunbarrel

This route is a journey through diverse Colorado landscapes. Starting in the generally flat and rolling terrain of Gunbarrel, you'll quickly transition into more demanding climbs as you head towards Jamestown. Expect serene, tree-covered mountains flanking Lefthand Canyon, with the ascent along Left Hand Canyon and James Canyon Drive becoming steeper as you approach the charming town. Olde Stage Road offers expansive vistas over northeast Boulder but is a particularly tough section with progressively steeper grades. You'll pass through sections of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest, following Lefthand Creek, with views of the Flatirons and Indian Peaks, making the effort well worth it for experienced cyclists.

Planning your visit

The Jamestown Mercantile Café is a key highlight and a traditional, welcoming rest stop for cyclists, offering refreshments, water refills, and facilities. While the route is generally well-trafficked by cyclists, the enhanced shoulder on James Canyon following the 2013 floods benefits both riders and drivers. For the best season for Foothills Views cycling, consider the fall when changing tree colors complement the soaring canyon walls. Parking for the Foothills Views Jamestown Mercantile Cafe loop is typically available near the Gunbarrel start point.
