Könnern station

Highlight • Rest Area

Könnern train station is the train station in the town of Könnern in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt. It is a connecting station with two branching routes. The train station was opened in 1871.
On October 15, 1871, the train station on the route to Aschersleben was opened. Könnern was temporarily the terminus. First, a large reception building was built and, on the opposite side of the station, a goods shed and a loading lane with head and side ramps. On the day of the opening, celebrations took place early in the morning. At 5:15 a.m., the first train arrived at Könnern station in the presence of many citizens. After the train arrived again at 1 p.m., the celebration continued in the station restaurant.

After the route was completed to Halle, the number of travelers increased significantly. Local industry and agriculture also used the railway as a means of transport for freight. It is thanks to her that additional companies were added. In freight transport, the incoming loads were mainly animals, grain, brown coal, briquettes and sugar. Outbound cargo included stone, cement, engineering products and steam boilers. The express goods handling was located behind the reception building. With the commissioning of the line to Baalberge on November 1, 1889, which then continues to Bernburg, sales increased again. In 1916 the route to Rothenburg, which was private until 1949, was added. This officially only begins in the north of the state train station, namely in “Könnern Anschlussbf”, which was called “Könnern Nord” after 1940.

Until October 14, 1911, the official spelling of the city was “Cönnern”. The name was then changed to “Könnern”.

St. Marien Church (Rothenburg, Saalekreis)

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Marien is the Protestant church in the town of Rothenburg in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt, which belongs to the municipality of Wettin-Löbejün. It belongs to the Wettin parish association in the Halle-Saalkreis church district of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. The church is registered as a monument in the local register of monuments under registration number 094 55151
The church, located on a ridge on the banks of the Saale, was built between 1840 and 1844 based on a design by Friedrich August Stüler in the neo-Romanesque arched style from the local reddish sandstone. It probably had a previous building built in the 13th century.
It is a squat rectangular building with a semicircular windowless apse in the east and a slender square west tower. Canopy-like open entrance halls flank the tower on the north and south sides. At the corners of the ship there are flat pillars crowned with pinnacles.

Rothenburg Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

Very nice cycle path, through the forest and along the Saale. The railway tracks have something of the Harz Mountains about it. 🚂
