Historic Brobergen Pontoon Ferry

Roland was a comrade in arms and nephew of Emperor Charlemagne in his wars against the Moors in Spain. When the young follower showed great courage in a battle and, at the cost of his own life, saved his comrades from certain death, Emperor Karl had the so-called Rolandi created in his memory. These knight statues symbolized the judicial law in certain places of the empire. In Brobergen, for example, a wooden Roland marked the place near today's ferry dock as a court of law. A total of about 100 such statues are documented, of which only a few have survived the times. The most famous representative is probably the Bremen Roland on the market square of the large Hanseatic city. But such a Roland is also guaranteed in Brobergen.
