Berum Castle, one of the most important sites in East Frisian history, was home to the Syrtza chieftains around 1310. Their inheritance was inherited by the first Count of East Frisia, Ulrich Circsena von Greetsiel, who built a moated castle here. Over the following generations, this castle evolved into the most magnificently furnished castle in East Frisia (1665). Subsequently, it became the residence of widows of the East Frisian princely family.

Unfortunately, Berum Castle was demolished under Frederick the Great, and its valuable furnishings were auctioned off, but the imposing outer bailey with its tower and gate survived.

Day trips to the East Frisian Islands, long walks, and bike rides in the forest, across the moor, or along the nearby coast are all possible from here. Just a stone's throw from Berum lies Lütetsburg Castle with its famous English garden.
