Kreuzkapelle Montabaur

Highlight • Religious Site

CROSS CHAPEL
The Kreuzkapelle was built in 1755 by the then mayor and master wool weaver Johann Hermann Monsieur as the "Holy Cross Chapel" from his private funds and donated by him to the parish of St. Peter in Ketten. At this point, in front of the outer city gate “Elberter Pforte”, a “Holy Cross” with an altar as the end point of a processional and station path leading up from the parish church over Koblenzer Landstrasse to commemorate Holy Week has stood since the Middle Ages.
The cross was first mentioned in a document in 1503, when on the Sunday before Pentecost the rural population of the Office of Montabaur made the oath of homage and allegiance to the new Archbishop and Elector Jacob II of Trier, who had come from Ehrenbreitstein, in front of the gates of the city of Montabaur.
At this point, the city fortifications ended with the Elbert city gate, which was connected to the Hollerer gate and the outer frog gate with an impenetrable hedge.
From a replica of the Mount of Olives set up in chains in front of the parish church of St. Peter, the processional path with seven stations of the cross led to the “Holy Cross”, on which a roofed altar was erected before the chapel was built. The stations were established after 1698 from a legacy of Pastor Dr. Martin Pulver lined with brickwork and footfalls and entertained by the “Holy Dead Fear of Christ Brotherhood” in Montabaur.
Due to its only occasional use, which has recently been abandoned, the chapel does not contain any interior fittings that are worth seeing.

Over 200 different cribs lovingly set up along the way. You have to keep your eyes open to not miss anything that is partially hidden in trees. The tour can also be shared if you don't want to or can't walk that far (small children).

Today I ran the route from the Münz New Year's Eve 2019 at Montabaur again. The landscape is not that great now. Commercial forest with corresponding paths. But you could also include a detour to the Köppel!

Today with the four-legged friend, the original coin New Year's Eve run in Montabaur easily ran.
