Haslach Mill Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

There has been a chapel in the former “Aue” area at the eastern exit of the town of Haslach since the first half of the 17th century. Originally it was called “Aue Chapel”. Named after the neighboring mill, it has long been called the “Mill Chapel”.
The chapel, built in 1622, goes back to the initiative of the Haslach mayor Simon Finkh (1580 - 1648). At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War it was initially very small and modest, but in 1652 it was expanded. The occasion was the vow made by the wife Margaretha Dorothea Finkh, née Gebele (1600 - 1663) and her brother, the land conductor Jakob Gebele (1601 - 1675) during the outbreak of the plague in 1635. However, this could only be fulfilled years after the great war.
Due to turbulent times, the chapel could only be consecrated in 1661 by Auxiliary Bishop Gabriel Haug from Strasbourg. At the consecration it received the title of “Immaculate Conception of Mary” (December 8th) and as a further patron saint John Nepomuk. The front of the chapel is decorated with a picture of the well-known bridge saint, who was killed in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII. was canonized. Another representation is inside the chapel together with that of St. To admire Franz Xavier. The latter was mentioned as early as the 17th century as the patron of a men's brotherhood that bore his name. According to the records in the agenda (workbook) of the Haslach monastery from 1753, the Capuchins looked after the mill chapel. They celebrated Holy Mass there twice a week. The Francis Xavier Brotherhood, which they led, held their devotions and meetings there.
According to the visitation report on the parishes of the Lahr rural chapter from 1666, the mill chapel had three altars. Unfortunately, after repair work in the 19th century, only the high altar remained. Because of the ever-increasing road traffic, the mill chapel was demolished in 1974. Fifteen years later it was rebuilt to its previous size in almost the same location.
In the customs of the Haslach population, the mill chapel plays an important role on the feast of St. Peter's Chair (February 22nd), the traditional stork day. Here, after the prayer of the “Angel of the Lord”, the procession of the children begins.
