Rothenburg ob der Tauber Town Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

It's great that so much of the city wall has been preserved and you can walk along it. Occasionally there is a tower that you have to walk through.
2-3 towers can be visited (free of charge) *. There are some narrow and steep stairs leading up to the tower. At the end, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is at your feet and you can enjoy the view. Simply beautiful.

*The towers are closed in the winter months

Klingentor

Highlight • Monument

The Klingentor (Klingen Gate) is the northern entrance to the old town and, together with the fortified church of St. Wolfgang, built into the outer defensive ring, forms the Klingentor Bastion. The Klingenturm (Klingen Tower), 37 meters high, was formerly integrated into the city's water supply. It housed a balancing reservoir into which water was pumped from the Bronnen Mill. This water supplied some of Rothenburg's fountains.

Monastery Garden at Naturpark Frankenhöhe

Highlight • Religious Site

Take a close look at Rothenburg through the centuries! The beautiful and quiet Reichsstadtmuseum in the old town presents a considerable spectrum of city and art history.
Since 1936, the museum is located in the former Dominican convent, which was dissolved in 1544. How did the nuns live here? Historic living quarters and above all the still well-preserved monastery kitchen from the 13th century provide an impressive insight into their everyday lives. The monastery kitchen is considered one of the oldest of its kind. In the center of the museum are the panels of the Rothenburg Passion, made in 1494 by Martinus Schwarz.

The foray through the museum also leads to the internationally acclaimed Baumann Foundation. It tells the history of weapons in Europe from the Stone Age to the 19th century and shows, among other high quality weapons, ceramics, pewter, modeling, locks. Highlights are the hunting rifles of Marie Antoinette and Frederick the Great.

Particularly noteworthy is the Judaica department. Here are testimonies of Jewish culture in Rothenburg presented. On the one hand, the exhibition tells the story of the flourishing of Rothenburg in the Middle Ages, which was also a Jewish blossom, but it does not spare the waves of displacement that began in the 13th century and culminated in the Holocaust in the 20th century.

Upstairs, the Gemäldegalerie invites you to immerse yourself in the atmospheric collection of the painter Arthur Wasse.

Opening hours:
April - October daily 09.30 - 17.30
November - March daily 13.00 - 16.00

The Kalkturm is a watchtower in the city fortifications, directly on the Mühlacker. If you look through the gate towards the city or the valley, you have a wonderful view.

Wildbad Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wildbad is a conference venue in Rothenburg o.d.T.
This is not a luxury hotel (although the garden and the ambience of the building would allow for that) but a non-profit educational facility of the Protestant church, which is happy to accommodate private guests at very reasonable prices.
The hotel is located outside the city walls, somewhat "hidden" behind a small wall. If you drive along the city wall (outside), you will see a small parking lot on the left. There are various signs here indicating that there is no public road from there. But you can safely drive on by car and then reach the conference venue, where there are also plenty of parking spaces.

Later you come into the city via a wide staircase with around 200 steps - so you don't have to walk back the entire way you came by car, but you can take a shortcut via the stairs and then you are right in front of the city gate.

The grounds and buildings really look like something out of a fairy tale and you feel like you have been invited to a castle - even if the building is not a restored castle.
