Cow Tower (Günzburg)

Highlight • Monument

Cow Gate / Cow Tower - Thonenthor - Donautor - Old Town - Günzburg - LKR. Günzburg

The Cow Tower in Günzburg, a town in the Swabian district of Günzburg, was built in the 17th century. The gate tower is a protected architectural monument. The lower part of the tower probably dates from the Middle Ages. The round archway and the vaulted shape were created around 1600. The octagon can already be seen in a city view from 1613. The coat of arms relief above the archway on the inside bears the year 1617. After the city fire of 1735, the tower was rebuilt in its old form. The tower, which was inhabited by a city servant in the 18th century, still has several detention cells. The gate tower is part of the city fortifications in the middle of the north front. The rectangular substructure has two floors and the octagonal structure with a dome roof and lantern has a further three floors. The round archways start above a transom plate. There is a flat cross vault in the passage. The appearance on the city side and the field side is almost identical. On the city side there is a relief of an angel with two coats of arms. In his right hand you can see the coat of arms of Margrave Karl and in his left the old city coat of arms of Günzburg.

The "Lower Tower" is a landmark of Günzburg
The tower keeper's room was once where the tower keeper lived with their families. The fifth and sixth floors served as work and living quarters. The tower keeper was also a music teacher. To supplement his meager wages, he gave music lessons to the students of the neighboring Piarist College. On clear nights, the Piarists are said to have studied astronomy in the top tower room.
Opening hours:
All year round:
