Coswig Castle (Anhalt)

Highlight • Castle

Built between 1670 and 1678, Schloss Coswig is of fundamental importance for the history of baroque castle architecture and the development of its typology in Anhalt and throughout Germany. It is considered the "birth certificate of the Baroque in Anhalt". Schloss Coswig consists of a 3,000-square-meter building ensemble.

It is located in the south of the city on the outer edge of an Elbe loop. In the 19th century the castle was rebuilt into a prison. In the courtyard of the castle, a memorial stone commemorating political prisoners imprisoned here during the Nazi era.

It was only on 1 April 1957, the civic institution Coswig was closed and the building used until 1998 as an archive. A subsequent planning for the establishment of a retirement home was not realized.

From 1998 Coswig's largest building is empty. In 2006 there was a change of ownership.

Since then, the castle has been restored and is set to return to its original state of 1679. The conversion to an art and culture center is received positively.

Elbe Ferry Coswig (Anhalt)

Highlight • Structure

History

Since Pentecost 1864, the Coswig Elbe ferry has been operated as a cable ferry based on the principle invented in 1657 by the Dutchman Hendrik Heuck from Nijmegen. Such a cable pontoon, as the ferries were called, hung, as it does today, on a wire rope that splits just before the ferry. One end of the rope is attached to the bow, the other part to the stern. If the lengths of the rope ends are changed relative to each other, the angle of the ferry to the river also changes. The pressure of the incoming water against the inclined ferry body pushes the ferry to the other bank.

Coswig (Anhalt) Ferry Crossing

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Not to mention the beautiful Elbe landscape and the Wörlitzer Park, where the path leads. You have to drive really slowly on the road to Wörlitz (cobblestones).

Lake in Wörlitzer Park

Highlight • Lake

The Wörlitz Park, also known as Wörlitzer Anlagen, is a landscape garden in Wörlitz in the Wittenberg district, laid out from 1769 in the English style by Johann Friedrich Eyserbeck under the regency of Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau (1740–1817), especially in the second half of the 18th century. The park is located on Lake Wörlitz, a branch of the Elbe, borders directly on the town of Wörlitz, covers an area of 112.5 hectares and has over a million visitors every year.[1] It is part of the Saxony-Anhalt Garden Dreams network and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The bridge over the Elbe is the only one nearby and is shared by cars, cyclists and pedestrians. The view of the Elbe and Wittenberg is fantastic.

There are impressive buildings to see, including the Luther House, which has been largely preserved in its original state since the Reformation. Many events and special city tours take place there. 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The Castle Church, the Luther House, St. Mary's Church, and the Melanchthon House are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Tourist Information Office is located at Schlossplatz 2. You can find the current opening hours here: lutherstadt-wittenberg.de/service/tourist-information.
