Rothenburg ob der Tauber Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is world-renowned for its historic old town, so well and completely preserved that one can truly experience the Middle Ages there. The market square forms the heart of the town. From here, one can admire the impressive facades of the surrounding houses. In winter, one of Germany's most famous and oldest Christmas markets takes place here and in the surrounding alleyways: the Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt.

Highlight • Viewpoint

There are many places from which you have a great view of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but I find the view of the medieval town, with its unique silhouette and towers, most beautiful from the Tauber Valley or from Engelsburg Castle.

Tauber River

Highlight • River

The Tauber is a river in southern Germany on both sides of the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. It rises at the west foot of the Frankenhöhe, flows in a northwesterly direction for about 130 km through the Franconia region and flows into the Main from left and southeast in Wertheim.

Origin story
The valley line of the Tauber traces an earlier tributary of the Urdonau, which flowed to the southeast against the current flow direction. Parts of today's Mainvierecks also belonged to him. Before the Pleistocene, the Taubertal was wider and flatter. Today's narrow valley was only formed during the cold periods in connection with extensive tectonic elevations. The Taubertal was presumably also included in the valley burial phases of the Main. Even the latest shaping processes in the Taubertal can be read. For example, the St. Achatius chapel in Grünsfeldhausen is now more than three meters below the level of the valley, which can be attributed to the deposition of meadow clay, which increased the valley floor by at least nine meters over the course of several centuries

The Taubertal cycle path (“Liebliches Taubertal” cycle path) is located between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Wertheim am Main.
- it is about 100 km long
- it is said that the cycle path is one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Germany
- in 2019 the “Liebliches Taubertal” cycle path was again awarded the top rating of “5 stars” by the ADFC
- 3 day stages are recommended

The train went from Laudenbach to Schrozberg! The great thing is that you can take your bike with you absolutely free of charge!
From there we are on the Renaissance route to Rotenburg o.d.T. and from there back the Taubertal Cycle Path!
Actually it was going down the river, but there were still a few poisonous waves 😬
