Great Mosque of Pristina (Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque)

Highlight • Religious Site

The mosque is also known as the Sultan Mehmed al-Fatih Mosque or more rarely as the "King's Mosque" (alb. Xhamia e Mbretit).

The Islamic house of worship was built in 1460/61 by order of Sultan Mehmed II. During Austria's Turkish Wars, the mosque was converted into a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier in the late 17th century. The writer Pjetër Bogdani was buried here, but after the defeat of Austria-Hungary in 1690 he was exhumed, his bones thrown onto the street by the Turkish army and the building converted into a mosque. Between 1961 and 1962 restorations were undertaken by the Priština Municipality; and between 1964 and 1967 the minaret was renovated, first demolished and then rebuilt.

The building consists of a cubic one-room building with a side length of 14 meters. The pendentive dome has a span of 13.5 meters and is considered the largest in former Yugoslavia. The building is made of stone on the outside and brick on the inside. A portico supported by four columns with three domes stretches across the width of the building. The mosque contains decorative paintings (floral ornaments in blue and black) and arabesques from the 18th century. A rosette forms the apex of the dome.

Newborn Monument

Highlight • Monument

Contemporary monument commemorating Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia. It was unveiled to the public on February 17, 2008, the day of Kosova's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, and has been one of the city's most recognizable monuments ever since.

The idea came to the artistic director of marketing agency Ogilvy Kosova, Fisnik Ismaili, just ten days before the official statement. The production of the monument began before it was even certain whether the organizers of the independence celebration would pay for it. Upon completion, it was presented to enthusiastic government officials, who raised the necessary funds and made the monument's unveiling an official part of the Independence celebrations.

The artist chose this English word because it only has positive connotations and the single words "new" and "born" can also be understood by people who don't speak much English. The Republic of Kosovo should be presented as a new, contemporary and modern country. Newborn was painted yellow because this color, together with blue banners, represents both the color of the new Kosovar flag and the colors of the European Union flag. As part of the advertising campaign, the slogans "NEW life is BORN", "NEW hope is BORN", "NEW future is BORN" and "NEW country is BORN" (New land is born) is selected.

Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, Pristina

Highlight • Religious Site

Ibrahim Rugova was a Kosovan politician, writer and President of Kosovo from March 4, 2002 until his death.

He is referred to by most Kosovars as the father of the nation, even as the "Gandhi of the Balkans". Der Spiegel also called him the "Gandhi of the Balkans".

Although Ibrahim Rugova was officially in favor of a non-violent solution to the Kosovo conflict, he did have contacts to leaders of the UÇK in the background, who paved the way for a violent uprising. After the Kosovo war, Ibrahim Rugova honored the KLA leader Adem Jashari, who was killed in 1998, as a national hero.

Rugova attached great importance to the protection of religious minorities. Pictures of his encounters with Pope John Paul II and of Mother Teresa, whom he revered as Albanian, hung in his presidency. Rugova also initiated the construction of the Mother Teresa Cathedral in Pristina.
