Description
If you're looking for an easy, high-reward hiking experience in the Thousand Islands region, the Hiking loop from Landons Bay is an excellent choice. This easy 1.9-mile (3.1 km) route, with a gentle 118 feet (36 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 50 minutes, making it perfect for families or anyone seeking beautiful scenery without a strenuous climb. It's one of the most popular trails near Landons Bay for good reason.
What to expect on Hiking loop from Landons Bay
This route takes you on a journey through diverse landscapes, characteristic of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. You'll traverse rocky, rugged terrain, winding through mixed forests, wetlands, and open meadows. Keep an eye out for granite cliffs and rocky outcrops, though boardwalks are in place for muddier sections. The highlight for many is the panoramic view from the Landon Bay Lookout, offering expansive vistas of Landon Bay, the St. Lawrence River, and the picturesque Thousand Islands. While generally easy, some sections, particularly on the Lookout Trail, involve climbing and can be steep, so proper footwear is definitely recommended. This trail suits anyone eager to explore rich woodlands and stunning viewpoints.
Planning your visit
The Landons Bay hiking trails are located within Thousand Islands National Park, near Gananoque, Ontario. While the route is generally accessible, be aware that steep sections of the Lookout Trail can be hazardous in winter. The area is particularly scenic during the fall when the leaves change color, offering a vibrant backdrop to your hike. Always wear appropriate footwear to navigate the varied terrain.
