Description
If you're looking for a challenging, quick outing with big views right from town, the Chihuahua Hill loop from Bisbee is a rewarding choice. This difficult hiking route covers 2.2 miles (3.5 km) with a significant 475 feet (145 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 1 hour and 12 minutes to complete. It's an excellent option for confident hikers seeking a vigorous workout and panoramic vistas without committing to a full-day adventure.
What to expect on Chihuahua Hill loop from Bisbee
The trail offers a dynamic journey, starting with a steep, rocky climb, especially after the initial half-mile from Ok Street. As you ascend, the path wraps around the hillsides, revealing expansive views of Bisbee's historic mining pits and the distant town of Lowell. While the summit of Chihuahua Hill itself might have low brush, the saddle between Youngblood and Chihuahua Hills provides truly sweeping vistas across Arizona and even into Mexico on clear days. Be prepared for uneven surfaces and almost no shade along the route, making it a demanding but visually rich experience.
Planning your visit
This trail is conveniently located close to downtown Bisbee, making it an accessible option for a quick hike. Given the lack of shade and the steep, rocky terrain, it's wise to carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months. The route tends to be less crowded than some other local options, offering a peaceful experience. Consider starting early in the morning to beat the heat and enjoy the best light for photography.
