Tobruk Bunker of the Croce Rossa Colony

Highlight • Historical Site

TYPE: FL243/FL249

This Tobruk Vf58c, together with the other three bunkers recorded in this stretch of pine forest, constituted the defensive system to protect the German command post that was established inside the Colony.
The Colonia Marina dei Fasci of Ravenna, completed in 1934, was used during the occupation as a German command post. From February to May 1945, the colony became the accommodation of RAF and SAAF pilots: a little further south, in fact, there was an important airport runway known as Ravenna Landing Ground, used by the Allies to take off fighter bombers. After the war, the Colony became known as the Italian Red Cross Colony.

On the top of this R668 bunker, designed to house 6 men, the projecting openings used to let out antennas or periscopes are still visible. On the side facing the pine forest, some rather unusual small circular holes were made: these are the holes that were supposed to house the dynamite sticks to blow up the bunker. At the end of the war, in fact, the law required the demolition of these military structures, but the physical resistance of the bunkers made the operation very complex from a technical point of view and often too expensive, to the point that various companies refused the assignment. In some cases, the option was chosen for a civilian reuse of the structures, in others, it was preferred to sink them or cover them with sand as in this one.
