Sigmundskron Castle (also Firmian, Italian Castel Firmiano)
Southwest of Bozen, above the small village of Frangarto in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle towers on a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name "Formigar" comes from the Latin "formicaria". It is one of the oldest known names of a castle in South Tyrol. The building was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD, later the name was changed to "Firmian". The Italian name of Sigmundskron is still Firmiano.
Owned by the Bishop of Trent since 1027, the complex passed to Sigmund "the Rich in Coins", the sovereign of Tyrol, in 1473. It was only at this time that the castle received its current name "Schloss Sigmundskron". The castle also owes its name to its shape, as the broad complex is reminiscent of a crown (Sigmund's crown). The castle is also a political symbol for many South Tyroleans, as it was here in 1957 that the "Los von Trento" took place, a large popular rally under Silvius Magnago to demand independent autonomy and to protest against non-compliance with the Paris Agreement.

Duomo Square, Trento

Highlight • Historical Site

Trento is the capital of the region and is a popular destination for those who love culture and nature, history and cuisine. Many people leave here to climb the mountains, it is in fact a well-served city for discovering other areas, such as the Val di Sole. The historic center can be easily explored on foot. The MUSE, the Museum of Natural Sciences (muse.it/) is worth a visit. In the main square there are often events: Autumn Trentino, which is a gastronomic event; the Trento Film Festival, where mountain films are screened; and finally there are always markets, including the famous Christmas market.

View of the Adige Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

This section of the tour offers a sweeping view of the Adige Valley, whose gently rolling slopes are covered in densely planted vineyards. Scattered houses and farmland stand out between the green rows of vines. While cycling along the bike path, the view conveys a sense of expansiveness, tranquility, and connection to nature, especially when the warm light of sunrise or sunset bathes the landscape in vibrant colors.

September 19, 2023,4. Tag / Bozen (I) - Torbole (Gardasee)
After this completely rainy night, it was nice to see that the clouds had given way to the sun.

Packing, sorting and clearing took a particularly long time that morning, which is why I didn't leave until 9:30 a.m.

It was nice to see this route, which I have ridden so many times, from a bicycle perspective. While the route …

In the direction of Roveretto, the cycle path leads through flat terrain. It goes along small dykes parallel to the Adige and in places along the Brenner autobahn, which is not particularly disturbing. Anyone who greets the oncoming truck driver will be rewarded with a horn salute.
I drove the distance of 150 kilometers from Brixen via Bozen to Roveretto …

Bolzano → Torbole | 114km | ☀️🥵🚴‍♂️🌊🍺

What a ride – 114km in almost 30 degrees. The scenery is stunning, but every now and then 🌞 + long distance = a mental challenge. Then: the first glimpse of Lake Garda – pure goosebumps! 🌊✨

Bolzano, I'll be back.
Today my route took me through the province of Trentino along the Adige River. Initially, apple orchards dominated the landscape, later vineyards. Trento (Trento) invited me for a coffee and ice cream break.

Today we said "Arrivederci Lago di Garda" / "Goodbye Lake Garda." At 8:30 a.m. we started our return journey in 28-degree heat. Down to Torbole, up to Nago, always with a smile 😀. A few last photos of Lake Garda. Through a biotope to Mori. In Ravazzone we reached the Adige River again. There were a few kilometers ahead of …
