Lama Tzong Khapa Institute and Stupa of Pomaia

Highlight • Religious Site

Castellina, located between the provinces of Pisa and Livorno, is a fascinating medieval village whose origins date back to the Etruscan era. This enchanting place stands on Mount Vitalba, the highest peak of the Pisan hills, which hosts a wind farm and connects the municipalities of Castellina and Chianni via the panoramic Montevaso road. From the top of this hill, on clear days, you can admire a breathtaking view that extends from Volterra to the Tuscan archipelago and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

Parrana S. Martino (Livorno)

Highlight • Settlement

Parrana S. Martino is a small hamlet of the municipality of Collesalvetti (province of Livorno, Tuscany) located along the eastern slopes of the Livorno Mountains, about 200 meters above sea level, where the wood gives way to large cultivated valleys.
It can be reached either from the north, coming from Livorno along the S.P.4, or from the east, coming from Pisa or Rome along the S.R206 (Emilia).
In both cases, you need to have well-trained legs, because there are some short but challenging uphill stretches.

The name is most likely a predial toponym (the suffix -anus or -ana indicates the possession of an estate by a landowner) and here, probably, refers to the Latin surname Parra (English: hoopoe, or owl); therefore Parrana would indicate a place characterized by this type of birds. The second part of the name, San Martino, refers, instead, to the local parish and serves to distinguish this locality from other homonymous ones.

Among the notable things of this area we can mention a necropolis and a section of the Leopoldine aqueduct.
The archaeological site (discovered only 10 years ago) includes about 150 burials and is dated between the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age (late 2nd - early 1st millennium BC).
The Leopoldine aqueduct was built by the Grand Duke Leopoldo of Lorraine in order to bring drinking water from the source of Colognole to the city of Livorno. It was inaugurated in 1852 and worked until the last years of the nineteenth century.
Its high and well preserved arches can be easily seen from the road coming from Livorno, before reaching the hamlet.

This grandiose work, inspired by French neoclassical architecture, was commissioned in 1792 by Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and completed by Leopold II of Lorraine, hence the name "Leopoldino". The neoclassical pipes and cisterns were part of a sophisticated plan to supply water to Livorno and clean it. It was Livorno's only water source until 1912 and still serves some parts of the city today. However, some parts of the arches are in a state of decay due to the dense surrounding vegetation.

Via Aurelia Coastal Road

Highlight • Cycleway

Unfortunately, the road from Miramare (southern outskirts of Livorno) to Rosignano Solvay is squeezed between the cliff and a steep slope upstream and has no room for a cycle path. Therefore, for the cyclist who wishes to go south and is not interested in traveling along a beautiful but busy coast , it is advisable (at the traffic light immediately after the Livorno hospital area) to detour towards the hilltop villages of Gabbro, Castelnuovo della Misericordia, Rosignano Marittimo and finally descend to the plains at Rosignano Solvay. There are continuous ups and downs (always below 300 m), but the road is shaded and with little traffic

Calafuria Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Calafuria tower is an ancient watchtower located south of the outskirts of Livorno, along the coastal road "Aurelia" (the former State Road # 1).
Its construction dates back to the 16th century with the aim of protecting the coast from raids by Barbary pirates; later, when its purely defensive functions ceased, it was used to control the coast in order to counter smuggling. For this reason it was also restored at the beginning of the twentieth century with the reconstruction of the roof and the perimeter gallery at the top,
The building has a square plan, with a body of almost 8 meters on each side supported by a large scarp wall; the access is located above this mighty base. The tower, about 20 meters high, is closed by a projecting gallery and a roof with four sloping pitches.
Restoration works are currently underway; therefore it cannot be visited.

Next to the tower of Calafuria and the bridge of the same name, there is the Calafuria Nature Reserve, a real paradise for hikers and trekkers: a large area that climbs the nearby hill, devoid of human settlements and rich in gorse, aromatic plants, scrub shrubs Mediterranean, pine trees and a fauna that lives undisturbed there.
