Villa Maurogordato

Highlight • Historical Site

Also known as the Villa of Monterotondo, it was purchased in 1771 by the rich Livorno merchant Giuseppe Calamai, consul of Russia, and used as a country residence. It passed first to the Polish prince Stanisław Poniatowski, then to the rich Livorno merchant, of Greek origin, Pandely Maurogordato (who also owned a magnificent palace in the city, along the Fosso Reale); he enriched the villa inside with valuable frescoes, paintings and furnishings; outside with a large romantic garden equipped with an oval pool and berceau and a long masonry colonnade surmounted by an iron structure, with a park full of ornamental plants, and above all with a stupendous winter garden in worked cast iron and colored glass. To the west a railing allowed a panoramic view of the city.
After World War II the villa was sold first to the USL, then to the Province of Livorno, and finally to the Municipality of Livorno, intended as a garden.
Today the property is in a state of complete degradation: the combined action of neglect, atmospheric agents, vegetation and vandals has affected the structures of the building, the interiors and furnishings and the garden, despite the numerous renovation projects recovery.

Scafurno-Calamai Chapel
It is a former sacred building located on the Monterotondo hill between Villa Rodocanacchi and Villa Maurogordato. Built at the beginning of the 18th century in honor of St. Anthony, the Chapel had various owners over time: among others Prince Poniatowski, the Maurogordatos (in both cases the same as those of Villa Maurogordato) and lastly the Anti-tuberculosis Consortium of Livorno, until it was abandoned and deconsecrated during the last century.
Reduced to little more than a ruin, it was purchased by the architect Fosco Cavallini, who restored it both outside and inside, making it a little jewel.
Today it hosts a cultural association.

The monument, commonly called "Monumento a Ciano", was precisely named after Edda Mussolini, daughter of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and daughter-in-law of Costanzo Ciano, a bigshot of Fascism whose son Galeazzo she had married. But the imposing work that was to be a mausoleum intended to house the remains of Costanzo Ciano and his family, as well as a museum with his trophies, was not completed due to the fall of Fascism.

Mount Nero

Highlight • Summit

The locality of Castellaccio (the hamlet that overlooks the Sanctuary of Montenero and marks the pass between the side of the hill that looks north, towards the city, and the one that looks south, towards Cecina), is located in a saddle dominated by two modest heights highlighted respectively by the Torre del Castellaccio (a neo-medieval style tower built about a century ago near the ruins of a thirteenth-century Pisan fortification) and by the actual summit of the Montenero hill (312 m above sea level). On this last hill, where during the war the 10th Oberdan Church Detachment of the Garibaldi Brigade was located, today there is a shrine dedicated to the sacrifices of the Livornese Resistance, which among other things facilitated the advance of the allied troops, managing to avoid a last disastrous bombing of Livorno and contributing to the liberation of the city. It is a circular structure inside which, alongside the symbolic presence of a cross, an anchor and a cannon, there are some plaques with the names of the fallen and other important protagonists of the local resistance.

The Rodocanacchi, Maurogordato, and Castelli della Vinca families originated from the Greek island of Scio (or Chios), which they had fled after the Ottomans carried out a terrible massacre in 1822.
Upon arriving in Livorno, they became wealthy merchants, among the most representative members of the Greek "Nation" of Livorno, and even acquired a noble title by royal decree in the 19th century.
For their country residences, the Rodocanacchi and Maurogordato families, also related by marriage, preferred the Monterotondo area, in the low hills east of Livorno. In the same period, they purchased two practically adjacent villas and transformed them into modern and elegant homes, surrounded by large, well-kept green spaces.
