The Scali d'Azeglio are the final stretch of the Fosso Reale, where it flows into the Darsena. The Fosso Reale, in Buontalenti's sixteenth-century project, surrounded the "pentagon" of the original Medici city and was connected to the network of minor canals which - particularly in the "Venice of the New" - had the task of draining stagnant and malarial waters. Furthermore, thanks to the connection with the Arno via the Canale dei Navicelli, these waterways guaranteed an efficient communication system for commercial transport between the port and the city's warehouses.

Terrazza Mascagni Pavilion

Highlight • Monument

Spianata dei Cavalleggeri was the ancient name of the open space on which the present Terrazza Mascagni was built in 1927. The name referred to a fort, which existed here, manned by nine volunteer knights assigned to the coastal defense service and, commanded by a lieutenant.
The fort (built in 1595 and demolished in 1872), had the stables on the ground floor and the riflemen's lodgings on the first floor; in 1837 the esplanade was enlarged by filling the adjacent cove called Cala dei Cavalleggeri. From 1945 it took its name from the Livorno musician and composer Pietro Mascagni.
The seafront position, often stormy, and the intriguing checkerboard pavement make it one of the most evocative places in the city, especially at sunset, and most loved by citizens for walks along the coast in all seasons. The first film reviews in Italy took place here in the nineteenth century. At the center of this large viewpoint there is a gazebo for music, a reconstruction of the one destroyed by the war and until the 1960s it often hosted an amusement park. Finally, attached to the terrace there is also a small but interesting Aquarium.

Fontane del Tacca

Highlight • Monument

In 1626, the sculptor Pietro Tacca (who also created the famous Four Moors group at the foot of the monument to Grand Duke Ferdinand I de' Medici) was commissioned to create two marble and bronze fountains depicting fantastical animals, shells, fish, and other marine creatures. They were to be placed in the Darsena to supply water to the crews of the galleys docked there.
However, the fountains never reached Livorno (probably because their water flow was too modest to satisfy the needs of so many sailors), but were instead diverted to Florence, where they are now displayed in Piazza SS. Annunziata, provoking strong resentment among the people of Livorno. Therefore, three centuries later, the Municipality of Florence decided to donate not a copy of the two fountains, but a second original (cast from the same mold that created Tacca's work). The municipality of Livorno then ordered, at its own expense this time, another "clone" and decided to place the two monuments at the end of Via Grande, not far from the statues of the Grand Duke and the four Moors.

Today Livorno was on our program. As a port city, it is known for its seafood and the fishermen are eager to defend their "prey" against the cheeky seagulls 😂
Unfortunately, Livorno has a port for huge cruise ships. The Venetia Nuova district is criss-crossed by canals, making it very cosy.
